Enabling DVI on Ubuntu notebook

I haven't been able to find a clear description on how to enable DVI external display on Ubuntu (notebook) machine. Although this might be applicable only to NVIDIA-powered machines, here's how I did step-by-step:

  1. Run "nvidia-settings &" in a terminal. This will open "NVIDIA X Server Settings" window.
  2. In "Layout" pane, click the rectangular shape that looks like the monitor you're adding now. In my case the rectangular has the vendor's name on it (e.g. DELL).
  3. In "Display" tab underneath the Layout pane, click "Configuration" button. Then choose the config you like. In my case I chose "TwinView" so 2 monitors show different parts (left and right) of your desktop.
  4. Click "Apply" button. This will reflect the change you made and show contents on your monitors.
  5. Do not forget to save the change in to the configuration file by "Save to X Configuration File"

As I implied earlier, I used a tool that comes with NVIDIA GPU instead of the default "Monitor" tool that is installed in normal Ubuntu configuration. For machines without NVIDIA graphic cards, I assume "Monitor" might take care of external monitors.

Good to be home in Dallas and have brunch at balcony.
