My career choice - ongoing
Upon getting a new job, in Japan for now, I have 2 different paths that I can take now, say Path-A & B. Caveat is that Path-A is irreversible; once I take Path-A, I can hardly switch to Path-B later on. On the other hand, Path-A will be still selectable after B was taken in the beginning, if I don't care wasting time.
Mid-term career objective (in 10 years from now): to become a senior level software engineer in robotics development. Yay!
So come two paths that I mentioned:
Path-A. Take software engineer positions with the skills I want to acquire / extend experience.
As I've been shifting toward robotics domain for the last few years, I'm still lacking experience in the programming languages commonly used there (C++) and also domain knowledge. Especially C++ hasn't become mine at all. Therefore, one way is to spend next few years to extend my C++ experience in any kind of software jobs; with this path I don't limit myself in robotics.
I'm satisfied enough with this plan. The projects I will get involved in might not necessarily be as exciting as I wish, but the main purpose is to acquire in-depth skills. In addition, this might also give me a flexibility to change jobs if necessary (the situation where I want to change jobs soon IS possible - I'm now separated over Pacific Ocean with my gf, and she will get a job next year somewhere in the US).
Path-B. Open a new organization where the skills that I'm familiar with is advantageous.
Backed up by someones who are senior in the related field, I'm leaning toward this option but not entirely sure yet. This opportunity is, combined with various situations, I'm the one of only a few persons in Japan who can take, if I'm allowed to exaggerate more or less.
However, I realized that I should refrain from describing much about this option - it's essentially not that different from launching a startup company (though very different from organizational point of view), and no one who's thinking about doing so wants to share even rough ideas on internet land no matter what.
Apologies for ending up with inarticulate conclusion. If I made you very interested and you think you could help me a lot, please drop me a line so that I might share details.
