New year's resolution 2011
2010 must have been a turning point in my life in mid 30's, where I might have experienced the bottom (i.e. steepest down curve) of my life but now finally I'm back to concaving up the hill process again, steadily. Although I've experienced entering new years more than 30 times and repeated setting new year's resolutions each time, every year it isn't that easy to define a goal of an year, especially because there'd be no guidance, model or best practice that can prove a resolution is valid so that the goals you set might not necessarily be objective enough. So this year I try to follow the link below to sort out the outcome in a previous year and come up with new resolutions.
According to A Smarter New Year’s Resolution - Look Back Before Moving Forward - By Peggy Klaus, there are 8 check points.
A-1. What’s Your 2010 Career Headline?
Experienced both the worst and the best semester in terms of academic grades, but the best part is in the graduate program newly begun.
A-2. Create Your ‘State of the Union.’
Currently about to start 2nd semester in the master program as well as started finding a internship job. Although studying in the graduate program currently enrolled is satisfying from the aspect of usefulness in the prospective future job, the status of staying away from real job for more than 2 years frustrates me.
A-3. Develop A Goody Bag
Built a nicely looking mobile armed robot system by overcoming several technical difficulties.
Actually there's not much to brag about this year.
A-4. The Big Picture
Getting hired as a Systems Engineer is the priority in these next few years. Aim this year is at getting closer toward it.
A-5. Check Your Connections
Nice to have made some friends and a reference in robotics field which I wasn't involved until last year.
A-6. Feeling Dissatisfied?
As described, for 2 years no job only studying in a school makes me gradually frustrated. Besides that, the status of not being paid prevents me from taking advantage of things regarding money and insurance. Hmm...
A-7. Are You Expressing Gratitude?
Yes I think I did (Skipping details).
A-8. Track Your Resolutions
One of the resolutions in 2010 was to acquire behaviors that might haul luck (blog in Japanese about this). Omiting details, I don't think I've succeeded in changing three habits specified in this Japanese blog back then. Maybe because those behaviors are more like personality rather than just actions.
Although I'm not so confident that the work sheet above is helpful enough to set the new resolution for this year, it gives me some hints. As a conclusion, this year's resolutions are as folows:
R-1. (Result) Get hired as an internship/co-op by the desirable employer
In order to achieve this one & only resolution, there are subsequent resolutions (SR) which are more type-of-action-based rather than result based (and also some of them are really arbitrary and indirectly related to the resolution above, not intuitive).
SR-1. No being late, with severe estimate of time and bravely postponing a task when no time before the next due / event
SR-2. Straight A in coursework.
SR-3. Continuous open source development. 3 new projects, updating 2 existing projects
SR-4. Continuous exercise. 5 days per week which can be either jogging, swimming, working out in gym/home. Result includes
