Issue on AT&T DSL + Apple Airport combination

This morning while I was using internet, the connection went off all of sudden and I wasn't able to get it back working. After shooting the issue it turned out a program error on AT&T side. So far, relatively common. What was unusual is internet became unavailable via a wireless router (Apple Airport Express) although it was ok via ethernet cable directly connected to the modem. Here's a workaround without the root cause detected. One last thing is the speed gets only 1/2 compared to the one before this issue (2.5 mbps -> 1.3 mbps according to http://www.speedtest.net), but I've not figured out the correlation between the issue (*1).

Concerning system structure: DSL Modem (Motorola, silver) is connected to a phone jack on the wall, Airport to the modem by ethernet, computers (Mac & Ubuntu) via 802.11g/n. Everything was going well before AT&T defection.

Phenomenon: From a computer, ping to internet failed by using both domain name (e.g. google.com) or IP address (e.g. 74.125.227.20).

Workaround taken: 2 operational steps made it go (even though I'm not entirely sure both 2 are the steps really needed).
Step-1. On Airport, adjust "IP Address" and "Router Address" with what the Motorola's modem for AT&T uses for LAN. See the figure.1 below.
Step-2. On Airport, add IP addresses of DNS servers that are available on Modem's configuration site (on this product I'm using, it's http://192.168.1.254.You might need to connect your computer directly to the modem by ethernet cable as you must have done so when you started using the modem).
Figure 1. Apple Airport configuration. Here "IP Address" and "Router Address" are adjusted to what the Motorola's modem for AT&T uses for LAN (plus, Router is the modem itself here).
My guess is something on the modem has changed after some fixing operation on AT&T side, so that Airport couldn't establish IP connection with it. Although there's no proof for that, otherwise it could not have occurred...

*1...Mar. 10, 2011. Speed gets back to normal after 1 day without doing anything on my room's side.

Mackerel pike. No matter how terribly handled at fish shop and how shabby the fish are, pikes are still great once it's salted and broiled.
